I know what your thinking, another beauty blogger…yuck!
The truth is I don’t blame you for thinking that. After all, there are a million gals on You Tube (most making videos out of their bathrooms or messy bedrooms) so who needs one more option on Beauty Products? Well, let me first tell you a little about myself, then you can decide if I’m interesting enough (my friends will say YES) funny (for sure they would back me up on this one) and, or knowledgeable about all things beautiful.
Growing up, my older sister was the first person to peak my interested in to the world of beauty and fashion. Well, I should correct that by saying that my mother was really my first beauty hero since it was she who sat down with the Avon Lady, once a month to order her “Iced Watermelon” lipstick along with the pink Avon bubble bath that made all those giant (probably packed with sulfates) bubbles. My mother started each day by getting dressed up (I’m not talking about throwing on some stained sweatpants and a tee-shirt) before she did her weekday chores. Her wardrobe each day included a girdle, stockings, make-up and heels before leaving the house to do her errands. I never saw her in a pair of running shoes, or without her lipstick on. Each Monday afternoon we knew she could be found under a large hooded hair dryer at the salon. It was a three hour weekly ritual getting her hair frosted, curled and styled. At night she might add a few stiff bristled rollers to preserve her bouffant and then wrap some toilet paper around her head for extra security.
As a child, I admired her beauty, but it was my older sister Cathi, with her thick long brown hair and flower child pizazz that really made heads turn. Cathi bought all the latest fashion magazines and we would sit on her bed and flip through each page, carefully examining the models and there style. My sister already wore Peter Max stockings and Twiggy like make-up and I couldn’t wait to grow up and be just like her! Cathi was already a natural beauty so she didn’t need much help in this department. I, on the other hand, as the baby sister had a much bigger journey in front of me. I had short, curly hair that most of the time was way out of control hair, cat-eyed glasses for bad site, a mouth full of metal braces held in place with a head gear. I was pretty young when I realized that my families “gene pool” had dealt me a different hand.
I knew one thing, I was creative, funny and smart. So I built on that foundation. I got involved in the theater, designed my own clothes by the age of 13, then went on to Collage (FIDM) and built a successful career as a fashion stylist. For over 18 years I told celebrites and models what to wear, how to wear it, and how to make it work! When I met my husband, he was also in the Beauty Business so we blended our knowledge and created www.ADiscountBeauty.com over 14 years ago. So, for almost three decades, I have been knee-deep in beauty supplies. I have come to trust some beauty products and to feel ripped off by others. I have learned the value of a great brush and blow dryer, where it is wise to pop for the expensive product over a cheaper version, and millions of other beauty insider information. I have worked with the top hair dressers and make-up artists in Hollywood and now, I would love to share my knowledge with you! For over three decades I have followed the trends in hair care, makeup and skin care. I have tested thousand’s of beauty products, appliances and more. Some times I’m super blown away, other times I feel like I have wasted my time and money.
I live in Los Angeles, so I barely have to leave my front door to be aware of all the newest trends. In fact I was out having a drink the other night with a girl friend and we ended up on “The Housewives of Beverly Hills” (FYI) there was a boat load of hair extensions and botox in that crowd, leaving me to remember what my grandmother use to say “Money can’t make you beautiful, but it can’t hurt either!” ( that is me, the blurry blob on the left hand corner of the T.V. screen!)
Anyway, I hope to be able to offer clear and honest reviews on products, treads and over all beautiful moments to catch your attention. Please send me your requests or comments as well. After all, a blogger is just useless without an audience!
Love, Jylly “Beans”
