Knotty Boy is the result of a need. A need for something to help dreads come together quickly, stay clean and healthy, and look damn good. Dreads, like all other hair styles, require attention, care, and luv. Letting them "just come together on their own" is fine if you want to take your chances on how they'll turn out in the end, and have a nice hat that you don't mind wearing for the next year or so. " -KnottyAdam U Of course, there are always materials around the house that others have used: honey, egg whites, glue, toothpaste, etc. However, unless you are interested strictly in the experimental research aspect, I would suggest you steer clear of these processes. If you are serious about nappy, none of these alternative methods are likely to make you happy. Especially if ya had to cut your dreads of cuz of bugs or excess dirt stuck to them or something. Now, I (Andrew) have (has?) used this stuff called Murray's Beeswax, and I know many others who have been let down by it, so I am taking a personal stand here. It was (in my opinion) too greasy and gross! My dreads, when using Murray's, smeared apart when I slept on them, and the slime ended up on my skin - ugg! It simply wasn't strong enough to hold them together (and it smells nasty - it contains perfume.) . Shea butter is widely used to help dreads come together too, but really is a lot better at shining up the hair than helping it to dread. It is also kinda greasy. Here is a few words from someone who tried to use a shea butter product to get his dreadlocks to come together: . . " "******" cream didn't work worth a flip....i want dreads that look like professional ya know the matted jamaican style dreads you know and love...the stuff i put in today just kinda twisted out and you can see right through my dreads its more like i put gel in my hair and twisted it...ewwww....i want matty natty dreads..." . There are also those who choose to melt beeswax down themselves and use it in their hair, but there are two significant down-sides to this. First of all, when the wax solidifies, it can end up lumpy, chunky, and pasty. The other down-side is the process of melting it yourself, which involves double boilers, thermometers, and what not - and the clean up is next to impossible. You also have to somehow apply it to all of your dreads before the wax solidifies. And, there is always the fact that beeswax is highly flammable and dangerous, and you simply don't want a wax fire. . The bottom line: Knotty Boy Dread Wax is a non-greasy, non-"cakey", strong holding, sweet !
