DemeterGin-&-Tonic-HH-Left.jpg
Demeter Gin & Tonic 1oz
$20.00
Ahh… a cocktail. End of the day slight intoxication: strong, sweet with a sweet-deep juniper finish. In the 12th century, records reveal the distillation of the predecessor of what we call gin was practiced for medical purposes at Salerno Medical School. Invention of process variously attributed to Chinese, Persians and Arabs. In 1650, Franciscus Sylvius, a Dutch doctor in the city of Leyden, Holland infuses juniper berries into distilled spirits in a search for a cure to kidney and stomach disorders and creates "jenever" origin. By the late 1680’s Dutch exports of gin exceed 10 million gallons a year. By the 1720's "Gin Madness" spreads through London as an escape from the brutal life of the nascent working class. Dram shops advertise, "Drunk for a penny, dead drunk for two pence and a straw for nothing". In 1750 Londoners are consuming 11 million gallons of gin per year. The tide turns in 1751 when the Tippling Act is passed by Parliament - the beginning of the end of "Gin Madness". The act eliminates small gin shops and leaves the distribution of gin to larger distillers and retailers. Within a few years consumption is down to 2 million gallons per year and the quality of gin has improved, and gin is on its way to becoming a gentleman's drink. Gin's position in Britain moves up as it grows drier and more refined. In 1870, "Indian tonic water" was invented to disguise the unpleasant taste of the quinine necessary to fight malaria in the tropics. It combines well with gin, and the Gin & Tonic we celebrate in our Demeter fragrance is born-necessary and essential refreshment from heat, tropical or otherwise.

DemeterWaffle-Cone-Left.jpg
Demeter Waffle Cone 1oz
$20.00
The first ice cream cone was produced in 1896 by Italo Marchiony. Marchiony, who emigrated from Italy in the late 1800s, invented his ice cream cone in New York City. He was granted a patent in December 1903 U.S. Patent No. 746971. Although Marchiony is credited with the invention of the cone, a similar creation was independently introduced at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair For folks who lived anywhere near St. Louis, Missouri, the biggest event in the summer of 1904 was the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, which took place in that city. No one knew beforehand, but that exposition was the occasion where ice cream cones were first made and sold, although this was not a planned event. This is how it happened. Charles Menches sold his ice cream in dishes the way every other ice cream man did. That August when the Louisiana Purchase Exposition was at its height, was a real scorcher, and one day disaster struck Mr. Menches. There were so many hot and thirsty fairgoers wanting ice cream that he ran out of dishes. And it wasn't even noon! He had more than half a day of business ahead of him and not a single dish to serve his ice cream. What did Menches do? Nearby was a stand where his friend, Ernest Hamwi, who was from Syria, was selling a Middle Eastern treat called Zalabia. Zalabia consists of a crisp, wafer-like pastry sold with syrup. "Give me Zalabia!" cried Menches. He rolled up the Zalabia, scooped his ice cream on top, and presto! Ice cream cones were born, and with it, summer treat extraordinaire, now available Demeter-style, sans calories

DemeterPomegranate-Left.jpg
Demeter Pomegranate 1oz
$20.00
Our favorite pomegranate story, not surprisingly, is the Greek myth of Persephone. Hades abducts the beautiful daughter of Zeus and Demeter, our namesake, and carries Persephone to the Underworld. Tempted by the luscious Pomegranate, Persephone is made his eternal queen by eating its seeds, only able to return above ground for six months, her return heralding the arrival of Spring. Given that heritage, Pomegranate by the Demeter Fragrance Library had to be great, and this one is, capturing all the freshness and deep, sweet, citrus flavor that tempted Persephone in the first place.

Demeter Laundromat 1oz

This is simply the freshest, cleanest scent imaginable. We don’t know if anyone can tell us why, but this may be the most comforting, comfortable scent in the Library. And if you can tell us, please drop us a note… J.F. Cantrell, having noticed that personal washing machines are a luxury many of his neighbors cannot afford, opens the first Laundromat, in Fort Worth, Texas. Soon thereafter, household appliances will get a facelift as the popularity of streamline design grips America. At Demeter, we celebrate April 18th as the inspiration for the freshest, cleanest scent we know, our version of Laundromat cologne.

Demeterrain-Left.jpg
Demeter Rain 1oz
$20.00
Have you ever considered the olfactory side of rain? You know it's coming, you can smell it in the air (exactly!). It does seem that on summer days when it is hot and dry, with a thunderstorm brewing just over the next hill, you can `smell the rain.’ Well, you can smell something, but rain? Have you ever tried to smell this same rain in January when the ground is frozen solid? Not a chance, but when the ground and plants are warmer, you can smell something. What you really smell comes not from the air, but the ground! Plants release oils that enter the soil and blend with the other earthy odors. These odors are released into the air when the relative humidity at ground level exceeds 75 percent. Moist humid air will transmit odors far better than dry air. In these moist humid conditions we notice these odors more readily. And since rain is so often connected with moist humid air, we tend to associate one with the other. The Demeter Fragrance Rain captures this complex sensory moment perfectly. Like poetry, Rain is subtle and difficult to define, but real, with Rain being the cleanest and most delicate of all Demeter fragrances.
